THE CREATION OF THE ICONIC DESIGN OF THE BURRASCA

Hear from Belassi, how the iconic design of the Burrasca was created. With the contributions of a renowned german designcenter, Johannes Scherr supervised the design development as Head of Design. See what it takes from a simple sketch to the ultimate Marine Hypercraft. In this exclusive interview, he reveals what it takes to go from a simple sketch to the ultimate Marine Hypercraft.

Let’s get inspired!

Johannes Scherr, Designer of Burrasca

INTRODUCING JOHANNES SCHERR

Johannes Scherr is an award-winning industrial designer par excellence. Known for everything from 20-tonne machines to wooden furniture, Johannes has made a name for himself across a wide variety of projects. The one constant is his passion for bringing his visions to life. Most recently he was able to give his passion free rein as part of the international design team for the Burrasca.

In your own words, what makes the Burrasca special?

The Burrasca is unique in that it combines performance and luxury. But the word “performance” doesn’t really go far enough. The Burrasca is a Marine Hypercraft and “hyper” is more accurate to describe the extreme performance that we seek in pushing design to the limit. Part of creating something special is to make a product less industrialized – that’s why the Burrasca is hand-crafted. The mechanics who build it really know every nut and bolt. Our goal is not to compete with other popular brands, but to build a product that is simply unique.

Design of Burrasca

What was the starting point for the design?

The aim was to unite two worlds – that of a luxury yacht and that of a high-performance sports car. In the Burrasca’s design, you can see that it really has a lot of emotion which is typical for an Italian design. This element comes from early influences like Ducati motorcycles which inspired some of the lines.

How long did the design process take and what were the milestones?

We start by gathering information and researching. This phase lasts about 1-2 months. We then spent around 1-3 months sketching, so you can see that we have a tangible vehicle design after a relatively short period of time. Once we have the key sketches, we like to move things to digital early on. For us, this means Photoshop, then 3D software. In total, to go from post-its on a board to the first prototype, it took about 1.5 years – which is pretty quick. But that’s when the real work starts: with such a high-performance vehicle like the Burrasca, there are many things to test and fine-tune.

Please take us through the design highlights

Bearing in mind that I am too near to the product as a designer to judge objectively, here are some standout aspects of the Burrasca:

  • The lines of the design – I love working with carbon and the lines of the Burrasca are sharp, stunning and instantly recognizable.
  • Cockpit – it’s the first craft of its kind to have a display/user interface.
  • Pointed keel – this makes the Burrasca more hydrodynamic – it cuts through the water better than any other products.
  • Color concept – the carbon detailing is very pleasing to the eye. Combined with the vibrant red-white-black color scheme, this really elevates the design.
Burrasca

What makes Burrasca stand out as a Marine Hypercraft compared to conventional PWCs?

The incredible performance of the Burrasca is one aspect – this is rooted in the engine design. Then, there is the interface, the UI. No other craft on the market has a two-part display. Finally, the handling really sets the Burrasca apart – it’s incredibly stable.

The Burrasca: Combining performance with luxury

The Burrasca is unique in its class as a Marine Hypercraft, as it combines ultimate performance with effortless elegance. Find out from Nico Lasselsberger how the heart of the Burrasca was developed – get all the insights about the high-performance engine.
